Proximal Femoral Cortical Thickness and Medullary Canal Diameter in Soft and Hard Water Regions

چکیده
This study compared proximal femoral morphology in patients living in soft and hard water regions. The proximal femoral morphology of two groups of 70 patients living in hard and soft water regions with a mean age of 72.29 (range: 50 to 87 years) was measured using an antero-posterior radiograph of the non-operated hip with magnification adjusted. The medullary canal diameter at the level of the lesser trochanter (LT) was significantly wider in patients living in the hard water region (mean width: 1.9 mm wider; p = 0.003). No statistical significant difference was found in the medullary canal width at 10 cm below the level of LT, Dorr index, or Canal Bone Ratio (CBR). In conclusion, the proximal femoral morphology does differ in patients living in soft and hard water areas. These results may have an important clinical bearing in patients undergoing total hip replacement surgery. Further research is needed to determine whether implant survivorship is affected in patients living in hard and soft water regions.

Fit-and-fill analysis of trochanteric gamma nail for the Thai proximal femur: a virtual simulation study.
The present study present a three-dimensional virtual simulation method to evaluate the fit-and-fill effect of the insertion of a trochanteric gamma nail (TGN) in 98 Thai dadaveric proximal femora. The circular best fit of the 2-dimensional cross-section of the femoral canal and the nail at 4 levels [d100, d120, d140 and d160] which were located at 100, 120, 140 and 160 mm distal to the tip of ...

Objective - The aim of this study was to measure the ratio of bone cortex (C) to bone diameter (D), (C/D) in radius/tibia, metacarpus /metatarsus and proximal phalanges in fore and hindlimbs to be used as a diagnostic guide in metabolic and nutritional diseases in Minature Donkey. Design- Experimental study Animals- Eight adult Minature donkeys. Procedures- Lateromedial, dorsopalmar and dors...
متن کاملThe effect of alendronate treatment on cortical thickness of the proximal femur in postmenopausal women
Background: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are used extensively for managing the osteoporosis. There are some controversies on atypical fractures of femur that associated with increase in cortical thickness (CT) and BPs’ use. In this study, the effects of alendronate consumption were studied on femoral CT as a predictor for atypical fracture. Methods: Forty nine post-menopausal women age...

متن کاملProximal femoral medullary canal diameters in Indians: correlation between anatomic, radiographic, and computed tomographic measurements.
PURPOSE To compare anatomic, radiographic, and computed tomographic (CT) measurements of the proximal femur in an Indian population. METHODS 26 left and 24 right dried cadaveric femurs were obtained. Each femur was divided into segments at 10 cross-sectional levels from proximal to distal. At each level, anteroposterior (AP), lateral, 45-degree internal oblique, and 45-degree external oblique...
